Apple's Most Ambitious iPhone Yet: Everything We Know About the iPhone 18 Lineup

SkillGrowth Academy · Tech Desk May 25, 2026 · 7 min read Trending

Apple is rewriting the rules of its annual iPhone launch. For the first time, the tech giant is splitting its lineup across two seasons — and with a foldable iPhone entering the picture, the latest iPhone rumors are pointing to the biggest shake-up in nearly a decade.

iPhone 18 rumors and expectations

A Split Launch: The New iPhone Playbook

Apple is deviating sharply from its standard iPhone launch formula in 2026 and 2027. Rather than debuting four new iPhones every September, the iPhone 18 lineup will roll out in two distinct waves.

The more expensive iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first-ever iPhone Fold are expected to arrive in September 2026. The more affordable iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air are slated for spring 2027 — meaning standard iPhone buyers won't find a new model on shelves this fall.

Apple is saving its less expensive iPhone models for early 2027, prioritising its three most premium devices — including a potentially $2,000 foldable — for the fall 2026 event.

iPhone 18 Pro: An "S-Year" Upgrade Done Right

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has consistently described the iPhone 18 Pro as comparable to the "S" phones of old — a meaningful but not revolutionary update. That said, the upgrades are far from trivial.

According to the latest leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a smaller Dynamic Island cutout for a cleaner, more immersive display. A major photography upgrade is also on the cards: a variable aperture main camera lens, letting users manually control light intake and depth of field — a feature previously found only on high-end Android flagships.

Apple's own-designed C2 modem with mmWave 5G is expected to debut on the Pro line, ending Apple's reliance on Qualcomm chips. Combined with the new A20 Pro chip built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, the iPhone 18 Pro should deliver meaningfully better battery life and performance.

A striking deep Cherry Red color option has been revealed by leaked renders, giving the 2026 Pro lineup a distinctive new look.

The iPhone Fold: Apple's Biggest Bet in Years

First Foldable iPhone — Book-Style Design

Opens like a book with a 5.5-inch outer display and a wide 7.8-inch inner screen at a 4:3 aspect ratio. When unfolded, it resembles an iPad mini. Titanium casing, Touch ID in the power button (no Face ID), and Apple's thinnest engineering yet — reportedly just 4.5mm when unfolded.

The iPhone Fold is undoubtedly the star of Apple's 2026 lineup, drawing comparisons to the moment the iPhone X overshadowed the iPhone 8 back in 2017. Manufacturing complexity may push the Fold's availability to as late as November or December — even if it's announced in September.

Apple engineers have reportedly been developing a multitasking system similar to Split View on iPad, allowing two apps to run side by side on the larger inner display. The Fold is expected to carry only two rear cameras, a trade-off for its ultra-thin profile.

At a rumored starting price of around $1,999, the iPhone Fold will be a niche device — nearly double the cost of the iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 18 & iPhone Air 2: What to Expect

The standard iPhone 18 — launching in spring 2027 — won't bring a design overhaul, but leakers suggest it will adopt the same smaller Dynamic Island debuting on the Pro models. Screen brightness is set to improve significantly, with Apple reportedly pushing suppliers to meet unprecedented luminance targets.

RAM gets a notable bump: all iPhone 18 models are expected to ship with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB on the iPhone 16. This upgrade should noticeably improve Apple Intelligence performance across the board.

The second-generation iPhone Air is still in development after the first Air underperformed commercially. Apple is exploring adding a second rear camera and improving battery life to better justify its $999 price tag.
